PERMIT - STEP BY STEP
To obtain approval for a "natural lawn" project, the follow-
ing steps are to be undertaken:
1. Obtain a "Natural Lawn Application" from the Building
Inspection Division, Room 109, City-County Building,
21.0 Monona Ave .
2 . The application may be completed in one of two ways:
drawing or written . description . * The drawing should
include the address of the property, a legal descrip-
tion (which can be obtained from your deed or the
County Recorder's office) the name and location of all
streets and the .lot dimensions (these can be obtained
from the City 's official map to be found at the City
Engineering Office or from your own deed records ) .
Areas to be devoted to heights of more than eight ( 8)
inch grasses should be indicated graphically on ' the
plan.
The written description should also. contain the address
of - the property, the legal description, the name and
location of all streets and lot dimensions, and a
statement describing the vegetation in general terms,
e.g. "prairie restoration", "old-field succession to
woodland" , "natural meadow", etc. The examples listed
imply a management direction. If you are involved in
other forms of vegetation management; please also
specify the intended "end product".
Both types of applications should include a list of the
grass plants that are to be included in your planting
and their location on this drawing. Special note
should be made of that part of the Ordinance that
applies to the areas of your site that adjoin streets
and neighboring properties and to the discretionary
power of the Fire Chief. This requires that an eight
inch grass height must be maintained at the terrace
area and a four foot strip at streets without sidewalks
and three foot strips at adjoining property lines
(unless waived by neighbors ) . Also, between June 30.
and October 15, when the Fire Chief determines that .a
site 's vegetation is a fire hazard, these plants must
be cut.
An example illustrating how a typical application might
look follows :
* A drawing is preferred because of the ease of its being
read.
13
