MEMORANDUM
DATE: July 26, 1989
TO: Mayor and Councilmembers
FROM: Larry Hamer, Public Works Director
ITEM: WELL #3
Use of Well #3 was discontinued on July 19th due to a separation
of' the lower unit on the bowl assembly. One stage of the pump and
suction -section fell to the bottom of the well. There were damages
to three spiders, 4 stainless steel shafts (10 feet long) and a 5
foot section of stainless steel shaft.
After the pump had been inspected, it was found that there had been
an error in the assembly of the bowl when it was overhauled about
a year ago by Bergerson Caswell Co. Although Bergerson Caswell Co.
has denied any error, I feel that a reasonable settlement was
negotiated.
The bowl was purchased new in the 1970's. Bergerson Caswell Co.
has offered to provide the City with a new bowl at a cost of
$2,678 .00. The regular cost for a new bowl of this type is about
$4,662.00. I feel this to be an agreeable solution. For that
reason, and the need to get Well #3 back in working order, I have
already ordered a new bowl from Bergerson Caswell. The bowl is
scheduled to arrive Wednesday with installation and completion on
Thursday and Friday.
Other costs for repairs to Well #3 are:
10 foot stainless steel shafts $188.00 ea.
(four are needed)
(Bid prices are about $384 each)
5 foot stainless steel section (2) $133.00 ea.
Spiders (3 ) $ 88.00 ea.
Labor and equipment for removal and $700.00
installation of the pump $700.00
All of the bearings in the pump (25) must be replaced. Bergerson
Caswell will not charge the City for this cost.
Layne Minnesota quoted $1 ,700.00 for the removal of the pump and
another $1,700.00 for its installation. They also quoted me prices
of $4,622.00 and $135.00 per hour for a bowl assembly, therefore,
Bergerson Caswell costs are reasonable under the circumstances.
