Ohl SUBJECT: 1998 Area Police Department Survey -------------------------------------------------------------------- The attached information is a survey I conducted with first ring and non-first ring suburbs of the Metro area. I completed this survey with sixteen (16) different departments . Some departments were larger in population, and some were smaller. I generally tried to poll agencies serving a similar sized population (including our contract cities) , as does St . Anthony. Below are some statistical generalizations gleaned from 'the facts of this survey: * Except for Inver Grove Heights, we have the lowest police to population ratio of all other polled communities. This is a telling statistic since I polled mostly non-first ring suburbs, and first ring- suburbs should have a higher than average (when compared to non-first ring suburbs) police to population ratio. * The average police to population ratio was one officer per 775 people. St . Anthony' s ratio is one officer per 888 people, Columbia Heights PD is one officer per 730 people, and Robbinsdale is one officer per 666 people. . Adding two officers would bring us to one in 800 . * One half of all polled cities have twenty four hour supervision. St . Anthony does not have twenty four hour coverage . * The average amount of officers supervised by one person is 3 . 7 . St : Anthony has 3 . 6 officers supervised by one person. The addition of two officers would make our officer to supervisor rate climb to 4 . 0 . * The average amount of investigators per officer is one in nine. St . Anthony has one in twelve (Anoka Co. communities excluded, as they use Anoka CID for investigating felonies) . * The average amount_ of support staff (secretaries) is one secretary per 5000 population.
