32
July 20, 2001
City of St. Anthony Village
3300 Silver Lake Road
St. Anthony, MN 55418
Re: Petition for Variance
2835 Roosevelt St. N.E.
St. Anthony, MN 55418
To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is to petition for a variance at the above property address so that we may build a
detached two car garage. My family has been St. Anthony residents for twelve years,
living at this same address. Our home was built in 1953 and has had no structural
changes since that time.
The original-single car attached garage has never been sufficient for our family (nor the
previous.owner), but due to other r family needs (children in college, etc.),-we put off the
expense of building a garage until now. At long last, we are finally in a position to afford
this addition only to find out that the 50 feet of property on the south end of our lot is not
enough, according to an ordinance on the books that even the City Inspector was
unfamiliar with. This ordinance states that we need to build 30 feet off of Murray versus
the 15 feet we anticipated and the 19 feet we allowed in our building plans. Everyone we
spoke with at the City of St. Anthony Village office about getting the building permit was
under this same impression, that only 15 feet off the street was required.
Like most families, we have more than one car. We currently have three licensed drivers
living in our home and have had up to five when all our children were still living at home.
For years our family has had to deal with the hardship of daily moving cars, because of
different schedules. Our current schedules vary from 5:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. in the
morning. Each evening we have to repeat the process of moving cars back into place. In
the winter we have to allow even more time in our morning routine to remove snow and
ice. All in all, it is much more difficult than it should be on any of us.
Over the years, this has been more than an inconvenience, especially when either of us
has had major surgery and were incapacitated, which has happened to both of us more
than once. If we have guests or out of town visitors staying with us that have driven, our
situation is compounded. We do not leave our cars parked in the street and have even
had to park one car on part of our lawn. The previous owners did the same, they even
placed gravel next to the existing driveway which we removed because it looked so bad.
