• STAFF REPORT
DATE: January 27, 1993
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: David Mark Urbia, Management Assistant
ITEM: SIGN ORDINANCE -- IDENTIFICATION SIGN ISSUE
BACKGROUND
The Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend to the City Council to amend
the following sections in the sign ordinance: 1400.12, Subd.1. (1); 1400.12, Subd. 2. (1); and
1400.12, Subd. 3. (1). These sections allow for one identification per right-of-way frontage
in residential, commerical, and light industrial zoning districts. The Planning Commission
recommended that this remain the case, but each allowed sign must face the frontage.
RECOMMENDATION
• Staff recommends to not approve the recommended amendment from the Planning
Commission. For most cases, staff will require what the Planning Commission recommended
without the need for new ordinance language. However, there are some instances were
flexibility is needed by staff to assist the business community with signage. For example, a
building facing a highway and a frontage road technically needs one sign. However, one
identification sign intended for a highway and one intended for a frontage road are two
different scales and vantage points. In these cases, staff would need some flexibility in the
ordinance.
•
