1 REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING • <br /> 2 FEBRUARY 22 , 1994 <br /> 3 PAGE 6 <br /> 4 <br /> 5 2 . Report of Councilmember Fleming <br /> 6 <br /> 7 Councilmember Fleming advised the Council " a new group <br /> 8 formed by residents of St . Anthony is present to explain <br /> 9 its purpose and mission. The spokesperson for the group <br /> 10 is Judy Makowske. <br /> 11 <br /> 12 Ms. Makowske advised the group has chosen the name of <br /> 13 "HEART of St . Anthony" which stands for Health, <br /> 14 Education, and Rights Task Force. <br /> 15 <br /> 16 She introduced members of the group who are Ken Mattson <br /> 17 Don Deval , Mary Ann Kuharski , and Dorothy Fleming. <br /> 18 <br /> 19 Ms . Makowske advised this group is fashioned after <br /> 20 similar groups already functioning in Minneapolis . She <br /> 21 cited specifically groups in the Jordan Area and the <br /> 22 Lyndale Area. <br /> 23 <br /> 24 There has been a mission statement drafted. The focus of <br /> 2.5 the group is one of connectedness and networking. They <br /> 26 will encourage communty commitment and hope to make St . <br /> 27 Anthony a more caring and safe place for -its. residents . <br /> 28 <br /> 29 While it is not the group' s intention to take over any of <br /> 30 the responsibilities of organizations already established <br /> 31 in the City, it is its hope to provide networking <br /> 32 opportunities for them. <br /> 33 <br /> 34 Funding will be requested from Hennepin County for future <br /> 35 activities of the group and for speakers and materials. <br /> 36 <br /> 37 The City Council is being requested to voice its support <br /> 38 for the group. Makowske felt this would be helpful when <br /> 39 Hennepin County is approached for funds . <br /> 40 <br /> 41 Councilmember Marks requested a copy of the group' s <br /> 42 mission statement . <br /> 43 <br /> 44 Mayor Ranallo inquired if similar presentations will be <br /> 45 given to other community service and civic organizations . <br /> 46 Councilmember Fleming responded this will be considered <br /> 47 after March 3rd. <br /> 48 <br /> 49 The Mayor also inquired as to how other people could get <br /> 50 into the group. • <br />
