EMERGENCY ACTIVITIES
We responded to 708 emergency calls during 1997. Although the numbers in
both medical and non-medical categories are down slightly from 1996, the fact
that we went over 700 runs for the past two years indicates that we have reached
a new plateau in the number of emergency runs each year (see chart on
emergency runs).
Our non-medical categories were unremarkable last year and our annual fire loss
_ was unusually low at about $1.60 per capita (as opposed to about $35 statewide).
This year I have added the new category "street flooding" to the list. previously,
we have lumped all water problems into one category and this new format will
differentiate between widespread flooding and single building flooding due to
broken water pipes, etc. Arson in St. Anthony was non-existent in 1997 and
cigarettes and cooking remained the primary causes of structure fires.
In terms of medical calls, cardiac problems remained the most common situation
while flu-like symptoms moved ahead of respiratory. Medicals constituted 70%
of our calls in 1997 which is consistent with past years and the chart on age
distribution shows that our patients are becoming even older than in the past. The
average age in 1997 was 67 and the median age was 75.
1997 FIRE LOSS
Structures $4,050
Vehicles $8,425
TOTAL $12.475
4.
