EMERGENCY ACTIVITIES
We responded to 845 emergency calls during 1999. This number is slightly
higher than in 1998 and seems to represent a new plateau in the annual number of
emergency runs. This recent increase in emergency activities is broad and does
not reflect a trend in any particular category. During 1999 we responded to 8
mutual aid calls for help from our neighbors and requested their help on one
occasion when a number of homes filled with smoke due to a power surge in the
area. An unusual fire was an attic fire on 29th Ave. which was caused by
spontaneous ignition from a squirrel's nest. The cause was unusual enough that
we consulted the State Fire Marshal's Division and the insurance adjustor before
determining a cause.
As in the past, medical calls comprised 73% of our emergency activities. Falls
and reactions from bee stings both showed a significant increase from previous
years while the other categories remained relatively consistent.
Our fire loss during 1999 was $51,254 and was primarily from vehicle fires.
This loss translates into about $6.00 per capita while the state average is usually
$30 - $35 per capita. The map showing the distribution of emergency runs
reflects a 2-year trend away from our senior housing complexes and into the
single family neighborhoods.
1999 FIRE LOSS
Structures $15,594
Vehicles $35,660
TOTAL $51,254
4.
