PUBLIC SAFETY EDUCATION
We continue to place a major emphasis on educating the public in fire safety. Our
success is evident in the fact that we host groups from surrounding communities.
We're also proud of the fact that fire safety has become an integral part of the
curriculum in both Wilshire Park and the home economics classes atAhe high
school. During 1999 we provided fire safety education to 558 citizens. Our 1999
open house also exposed about 250 citizens to various safety messages. We also
provide a successful safety camp through the Community Services playgrounds
program. In 1999 we 73 participants at this camp.
EMS ACTIVITIES
One of the priorities in our EMS system is the education of St. Anthony's citizens
in first aid and CPR. We provided this training to youth groups, high school
classes (CPR is required for graduation), senior citizens, and employee groups in
the city. During 1999, 856 people received this training from us. This is the first
year that the demand for first aid training exceeded the demand for fire safety
classes.
Another program we offer is free blood pressure checks. During 1999 we took
670 blood pressures for citizens in this area. In addition to helping people
maintain blood pressure programs, we also discover problems that might
otherwise go undetected.
Because of standards established in 1984, our roster currently contains 1
paramedic, 17 EMT's, and 8 first responders.
16.
