MEMORANDUM
DATE: 06/11/02 MEETING DATE: 06/18/02
TO: Planning Commission Members
FROM: Susan M.H. Hall, Assistant City Manager
SUBJECT: Ground Sign Placement
Requested Action:
Amend City Ordinance Section 1400.10 subd. 5(2) regulating the placement of ground
signs to: "Signs must be located at least 15 feet from the traveled portion of any public
street and cannot be placed within any street right of way or governmental easement."
Background:
There has been some confusion, particularly on the staff level, about where the 15 feet
is counted from (public street, property line) with ground signs. The bottom line is, and
the biggest reason for the amendment, is the sign cannot be placed in an easement.
The City intentionally did not use property line because in some circumstances the
property line is in the middle of the street and would likely cause more confusion.
Staff Recommendation:
For clarification purposes, staff_recommends approval of the amendment to the City
Ordinance in relation to the placement of ground signs.
Attachment:
