t r rt cws ns c o
o rt
2304 Central Avenue NE
Minneapolis, MN 55418
(612)788-9003(voice) (612)788-3299 (fax)
June 3, 2004
Mary Bonneville
2801 Hilldale Ave.
St. Anthony, MN 55418
I am writing to apologize for the error that was printed in today's Northeaster. I am
sending a copy of this letter to St. Anthony city officials.
As you know, today's Northeaster carried a reference to your letter to the editor that
was printed in the May 20 Northeaster. Today's article incorrectly paraphrased your
letter in a sentence that read:
She claimed the city has a history of driving out small businesses, and has
incurred numerous lawsuits charging it with sexual, racial or disability
discrimination."
The passage should have read, "She claimed the store has a history of..."
The article was submitted by Gail Olson, and was reviewed and revised by both
Kerry Ashmore and Margo Ashmore, as is our common practice. Throughout that
process, the word "store" was in its proper place and the reference to your letter was
accurate. At this point, I am not able to offer you a logical explanation for why or how
the word "city" was substituted for the word "store." The passage is six lines away
from any copy that we know was altered after the abovementioned editing process,
and we can't think of any reason to have paid special attention to the word"store."
I realize that you.have "stuck your neck out" on this issue, in opposition to city
officials, and I very much respect and admire you for that. I also realize that the
printed passage makes it appear that you are leveling untrue allegations against the
city, which is hurtful to all concerned and damages credibility on all sides.
Our goals always are to provide correct information and to help the community. With
this error, we have failed in both areas. Our mistake was not intentional, and I am
truly sorry that it happened. I offer no excuses for it. We will print a detailed
correction in the June 17, 2004 Northeaster. I am willing to meet with you and
anyone who has further concerns about this, and I am willing to print a letter from
you etailing your perspective.
e
erry Ashmore
Publisher
