1 Council Meeting <br /> 2 May 26, 1992 <br /> 3 Page 4 <br /> 4 <br /> 5 <br /> 6 Councilmember Enrooth <br /> 7 <br /> 8 The Councilmember reported that the City had actually come out <br /> 9 $3 .29 ahead on the May 2nd Clean Up Day. He thanked Mayor <br /> 10 Ranallo and Councilmembers Wagner and Fleming for helping to <br /> 11 make the activity such a success.. Councilmember Enrooth <br /> 12 indicated there would be another Clean Up Day held in <br /> 13 September and his Committee . plans to sponsor similar clean ups <br /> 14 twice a year in the future. The efforts of the Public Works <br /> 15 Department personnel were also gratefully acknowledged. <br /> 16 <br /> 17 Councilmember Marks <br /> 18 <br /> 19 The Focus had carried a story on the Sisters Cities visitors <br /> 20 from Salo, Finland and the Councilmember reported receiving <br /> 21 the first offering of housing for the visitors . <br /> 22 <br /> 23 Mayor Ranallo <br /> 24 <br /> 25 The Mayor reported reception of a letter that same day from <br /> 26 the Chairman of the Hennepin County Commissioners in which Mr. <br /> 27 Derus requested St. Anthony representation at the public <br /> 28 hearing on "Diversity of programs available to families in <br /> 29 Hennepin County" which will be conducted by the U. S. Advisory <br /> 30 Committee on Families at the Hennepin County Center from May <br /> 31 26 through May 29, 1992 . <br /> 32 <br /> 33 Mayor Ranallo reported that on May 20 he had presented the <br /> 34 Chamber of Commerce .Bob Sundland Memorial award to Pat <br /> 35 Sommerville of St. Anthony who will be attending classes on <br /> 36 Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. The Mayor said <br /> 37 he also gave his State of the City address at the meeting <br /> 38 after which one of the members approached him to ask why the <br /> 39 City didn' t use tax increment funding to a greater extent. The <br /> 40 Mayor said- he told the questioner all the problems the City <br /> 41 has run into trying to set up this type of funding for <br /> 42 prospective businesses like CUB and SuperValue. The man was <br /> 43 referred to the City Manager for further information and that <br /> 44 discussion apparently convinced him .that tax increment <br /> 45 financing was not the safest route to pursue to get more <br /> 46 business for the City. <br /> 47 <br /> 48 Mayor Ranallo indicated his State of the City address on cable <br /> 49 had also included information on tax increment financing and <br /> 50 no viewers had accepted his invitation to pursue the subject <br /> 51 further with City staff . As a matter of fact, in spite of <br /> 52 heavy coverage, of the talk prior to the telecast and the <br /> 53 repetition of the program seventeen times on cable, the Mayor <br /> 54 indicated he had heard from only five persons who had viewed <br /> 55 his presentation. <br />
