Subd. 1. ADVERTISING MESSAGE: that copy on a sign describing products <br /> or services being offered to the public. <br /> Subd. 2. ANIMATED SIGN: a sign which includes action or motion. <br /> Subd. 3. BILLBOARD: a sign erected for the purpose of advertising a product, <br /> event, person, or subject not entirely related to the premises on which said sign is <br /> located. <br /> Subd. 4. BUSINESS FRONTAGE: the linear frontage of that portion of a <br /> building facing the right-of-way and occupied by one separate business. <br /> Subd. 5. CANOPY: a permanent roof structure attached to and supported by <br /> the building. <br /> Subd. 6. CHANGEABLE COPY SIGN: any sign which is characterized by <br /> changeable copy, letters, or symbols, regardless of method of attachment. <br /> Subd.. 7. DIRECTIONAL SIGN: an on-premises sign designed to guide or <br /> direct pedestrian or vehicular traffic. <br /> Subd. 8. ELECTRIC SIGN: any sign containing electrical wiring but not <br /> including signs illuminated by an exterior light source. <br /> Subd. 9. FLAGS: devices generally made of flexible materials, such as cloth, <br /> paper, or plastic, and displayed on poles, strings or wires, but excluding the flag of <br /> any_country or state. <br /> Subd. 10. FLASHING SIGN: an illuminated sign which contains flashing lights <br /> or exhibits noticeable changes in light intensity. <br /> Subd. 11. GROUND SIGN: any sign which is freestanding by virtue of being <br /> structurally independent of any structure or object, is affixed to the ground by means <br /> of a base with no visibility between the bottom of the sign and the base on which it <br /> is attached and may make use of landscaping to enhance the appearance of the <br /> signage. <br /> Subd. 12. HISTORICAL IDENTIFICATION SYMBOLS: those symbols which <br /> have historically been identified with the service the establishment provides, are <br /> common to similar enterprises in all other localities and are not a particular <br /> trademark or business identification. <br /> Subd. 13. ILLUMINATED SIGN: a sign designed to give forth any artificial or <br /> reflected light, either directly from a source connected with the sign or indirectly from <br /> 2 <br />
