PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING
AUGUST 3 , 1993 •
PAGE 2

Management Assistant Urbia responded this had been discussed
with the City Manager. The City Manager' s position was to
commence the first public hearing of the meeting at 7 : 05 p.m.
as is presently the practice.

Urbia advised this conditional use permit request was the
primary reason for this special Planning Commission Meeting.

Approval is being sought before school starts . If this matter
were not considered before the regularly—scheduled Planning
Commission Meeting, it would be too late to locate the
portable classroom on school property with Council approval .

The Council indicated it chose to have this matter brought
before the Planning Commission for its review process and not
to have this process circumvented . -

Urbia explained that this portable classroom will be used to
alleviate space needs for special work projects and will not
be used for actual classes . It will be located on the Wilshire
Elementary School property in an area which is not readily
visible from other areas of the neighborhood.,
•
The trailer is 12 ' x 56 ' with a 4 ' hitch on the north end . It
will have two doors and the proposed location is twenty feet
from the building. State law requires it be located at least
ten feet from the building.

David .Abrahamson , principal of Wilshire Elementary School , was
present to respond to any questions members of the Planning
Commission may have .

Commissioner Werenicz observed that currently a Task Force is
meeting to consider permanent solutions for overcrowding in
the schools . He questioned why there is a plan to place this
trailer in this location for two years . He recalled another
temporary trailer issue was for a period of one year .

Urbia responded that there appears there will be a space need
for two years for this type of portable classroom.

Mr . Abrahamson noted there is much better lease cost for two
years than one. He also advised there will be no plumbing in
the trailer but there will be electricty and electric heat .

•
