MEMORANDUM
DATE: August 9, 1994
TO: Michael Morrison, City Manager
CC: Larry Hamer, Public Works Director
Planning Commission Members
FROM: Chris Makowske, Planning Commissioner
RE: RECOMMENDATION ON CORNER LOT FENCE POLICY
In summarizing our findings regarding corner lot fences in St. Anthony, Mr. Hamer
indicated that the difficulty might be solved by the addition of an ordinance regarding
interior side yards. Based on that, and in accordance with the City Council's directive
on formulation of a policy for corner lots, I have drafted the following proposals for
the next Planning Commission meeting:
• Add to definitions in Section 1605.01:
Subd. 80. Yard, Exterior Side. A side yard which abuts a street or
public right-of-way [along the side lot line] .
Subd. 82. Yard, Interior Side. A side yard which abuts an adjacent side
yard or back yard [along the side lot line] .
• Re-number present Subd. 80-84.
• Add to Section 1320.03, Subd. 3 or as a separate Subd.:
On corner lots where an interior side yard abuts the back yard of an
adjacent property [along the side lot line] , a fence not exceeding 6' in
height may be built on the interior side yard forward to the front lot
line and a fence not exceeding 4' in height may be built on the exterior
side yard. (See definitions in Section 1605.01)
or alternately, using simpler, but less clear, wording:
Corner lots. Where an interior side yard abuts the back yard of an
adjacent property, a 6' fence may be built in the interior side yard
forward to the front lot line and a 4' fence may be built in the
exterior side yard.
