For more <br /> information about the code, call 924-2588. <br /> Shoveling Sidewalks, Driveways & <br /> Hydrants <br /> City ordinance prohibits individuals from shoveling or blowing snow onto streets. <br /> Sidewalks: <br /> For your neighbor's safety,please shovel sidewalks promptly. Failure to shovel sidewalks may result in <br /> tagging and a fine.Prompt shoveling is in your best interest. If someone falls on your unshoveled <br /> sidewalk,you may be held Iiable for their injuries. <br /> Shoveling public sidewalks is the responsibility of the abutting property owner. City ordinance requires <br /> homeowners to shovel sidewalks on the same day of a snowfall if six hours of daylight remain after the <br /> snow has stopped falling. Otherwise,sidewalks must be cleared by noon the following day. <br /> Driveways: <br /> Snow pushed back onto driveways by snowplows is an unavoidable fact of winter. However,you can <br /> lessen the amount of snow thrown back onto your driveway by throwing snow to your right--as you face <br /> the street--when shoveling. (This is the same direction that plows will push the snow.) <br /> Fire Hydrants: <br /> To save precious minutes in case of a fire,please clear snow away from fire hydrants. Your action could <br /> save a life: <br /> Special Assessments <br /> Special assessments are one way property owners pay for the benefit they receive from construction or <br /> repair of streets,sidewalks and alleys.The cost of a public Improvement is usuall diided <br /> on$ <br /> front-foot or area basis. Public hearings are held before an improvement is ordered.y v <br /> Payment for special-assessments is due November 14.The property owner can pay a portion of the <br /> assessment, plus interest, over a period of years with the annual real estate taxes.
