•
MEMORANDUM
DATE : February 17 , 1982
TO: Dave Childs , City Manager
FROM: Larry Hamer , Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Bus Shelters
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The City has two bus shelters , located at 37th and Silver Lake Road
and Silver Lake Road, south of Silver Lane . We have requested two
additional locations and these have been investigated by the M.T. C.
One location request was north of the liquor store on St . Anthony
Boulevard and the other was 29th Avenue and Silver Lake Road.
The 29th Avenue location, according to M.T.C. , meets their criteria
for "ride-ability" . However, the St. Anthony Boulevard location
does not. When the requested location does not meet the M.T.C.
standards , the City must share in the construction costs , etc .
• Apparently , requests for bus shelters do not have to be made by the
City - the shelter at 39th and Silver Lake Road was not. The shelters
must be approved by the City and County , however , if they are on a
County road, because the City is required to sign a cleaning/main-
tenance agreement for the structure.
There have been no other requests for shelters other than the two
mentioned above . It is the City ' s option whether they want to share
the cost for the shelters . At this time , the City has no specific
policy regarding this .
RECOMMENDATIONS
I recommend the following :
(1) All bus shelter requests be submitted to the City .
(2) Evaluation of requests be done by the City prior to forwarding
them to the M.T. C. The City ' s responsibility is to contact
property owners who would be affected by construction of the
structure. The M. T. C. would then be able to evaluate the site
for its "ride-ability" .
(3) With the agreement of the M. T. C. and the property owners
abutting the proposed site , construction of the shelters should
• be acted upon.
LH/cjk.
