® O Metropolitan Council
300 Metro Square Building
® oll Seventh and Robert Streets
St. Paul, Minnesota 55101
Telephone (612) 291-6359
.WiN(;IT\Cy
August 17, 1987
To: Local Government Key Contacts
Over the past several months the Metropolitan Council has been involved'in
discussions with its staff to identify and give focus to the major issues that
need to be dealt with in the Council's revision of the Transportation chapter
of the Metropolitan Development Guide. We want to inform you of progress to
date. in the revision of the Transportation Policy Plan and invite you to
participate in the ongoing plan revision process.
The enclosed paper is a summary of the goals and assumptions of Council members
regarding transportation in our region and provides the foundation for
revisions to the policy plan. The goals set forth in the paper provide general
direction for addressing the region's transportation issues and respond to our
assumptions about these issues.
• By the end of September, staff expects to complete the initial draft of the
plan, which will then be forwarded to the Regional Transit Board for its 90-day
review as prescribed by state law. In April of next year, the Council will
hold a formal public hearing on the draft plan, with adoption expected in June
1988.
During the next eight months, the draft plan will be the subject of discussion
in numerous settings including the Council's Metropolitan Systems Committee,
the Transportation Advisory Board and at least one forum for local planners.
If you have questions about the summary paper or would like more information
about the various stages of the review process, please contact Carl Ohrn of our
Transportation staff at 291-6507.
Over .the past year, Council staff has prepared a series of issues papers that
have served as the basis for discussion in the plan revision process. For your
information, I am enclosing a list of these issues papers available from our
Data Center.
Sincerely,
6
tz /<
Steve Keefe
Chair
Enclosures
•
An Equal Oppo,tun;ty Employer
