August 12, 1988
To: Members of the Planning Commission
From: David M. Childs, City Manager
Re: 88-17 Request for Sign Variance, TA's Restaurant (formerly
Mr. Hobo)
This is a request from Thomas J. Aulwes for a variance from the
sign regulations of the City Code to allow a second wall sign on
the east side of the building at 2905 Kenzie Terrace. The
ordinance allows one wall sign of up to 100 square feet at this
location. The applicant proposes two signs of 56 square feet
each for a total of 112 square feet of signage. The applicant
also agrees to remove the roof sign which has been grandfathered.
from the past owners. The exchange of a smaller wall sign for
the removal of the roof sign is certainly a good compromise from
my point of view. A variance for a second sign on a corner lot
has previously been allowed and in this case, the applicant
really has three street frontages. I recommend approval of the
variance.
