Regular Council Meeting . <br /> January 22, 1991 <br /> page 3 <br /> made at the Chamber' s Annual Dinner on April 5th at Jax-Cafe. <br /> 2 <br /> A member of the Council inquired if Bob Sundland would be eligible tO <br /> be nominated. Mayor Ranallo responded that the award will not be <br /> 5 made to a deceased resident of the community. This matter had been <br /> L discussed by Chamber members. <br /> 7 <br /> P The Mayor noted that the Chamber of Commerce awards a scholarship <br /> 9 annually in Bob's name. The scholarship is for $1 ,000 and is given <br /> 10 to a student who is a resident of St. Anthony and is pursuing a career <br /> I ] in Public Administration or Political Science. Another scholarship is <br /> 12 also awarded to a graduate of St. Anthony High -School and another <br /> 13 for Bob Sundland' s memory. <br /> i4 The Mayor advised that both the Bulletin and the Northeaster will be <br /> 15 receiving information on the VilT-agerof the Year Award. <br /> 16 <br /> 17 Mayor Ranallo had. recently met with a group of suburban mayors to discuss <br /> 18 <br /> 19 the Fiscal Disparities Act . The group voted unanimously not to pursue <br /> 20 this matter as they felt there were more important issues to be addressed. <br /> 21 <br /> 22 As a representative of the League of Minnesota Cities Federal Legislation <br /> 23 Committee, Mayor Ranallo met with Representative Jim RarAstad to discuss <br /> 24 the purpose and charge of the League. Originally, all newly-elected <br /> 25 federal representatives of the State had been invited to attend this <br /> 26 meeting. Representative Ramstad was the only one to attend the meeting. <br /> 27 Ann Higgins, the League' s Federal Liaison on legislative activities, <br /> 28 also attended the meeting. The League' s purpose and the purpose of the <br /> 29 National League of Cities was explained and was well received by Rep- <br /> 30 resentative Ramstad. <br /> 31 <br /> 32 b. Councilmember Wagner's Report <br /> 33 <br /> 54 Councilmember Wagner attended the orientation program sponsored by the <br /> 35 Ramsey County League of Local Governments. He felt all of the information <br /> 36 was useful and the format for presentation was very effective. <br /> 37 c. Councilmember Fleming' s Report <br /> 38 Councilmember Fleming also attended the orientation program sponsored by <br /> 39 the Ramsey County League of Local Governments. She found the comments <br /> 40 made by Mayor Benke particularly interesting. He addressed the issue <br /> 41 of demographics specifically in the area of baby boomers who -have children <br /> 42 whose interests may be steered into volunteerism. <br /> 1,3 <br /> J,4 <br /> L; Councilmember Fleming noted that Mayor Benke cautioned that discontent <br /> 46 of the population may be focused on local elected officials. <br /> 47 Mayor Benke also advised that members of volunteer fire departments are <br /> 48 beginning to view their participation on this line of volunteering as <br /> 49 <br /> so <br />
