26
• Add seating for small groups to gather in the great hall. Other community centers
• use upholstered furniture in their lobbies and it seems ours could benefit from fabric
to soften the acoustical loudness of the room as well as add to the functionality of
the room. Kiwanis, Sports Boosters or other civic groups might be willing to help us
with the cost of benches.
Bring in a display of photographs documenting the history of St.Anthony to add
interest to the.great hall. If there is a concern for their safety,_use duplicates of the
photos that could be replaced easily if there is damage.
• Hang banners in the gym (borrow a theme from a neighboring gym and have the
banners promote good sportsmanship'and community values) and from the street
lights in front of the building.
• People in the community want a coffee shop - bring in a coffee kiosk.
• We have a nice city logo - use it on the front of the building instead of the institution-
al lettering.
• Integrate the landscaping of the front of the building with the rest of the central park
redevelopment. Use the services of the landscape architects now working on the
park to'bring some beauty and use to our"front yard." Some of the suggestions
included adding benches, decorative plantings, banners; and flower boxes under the
• windows in front.
• 'In the back of the building, add trees by the playground. Consider grape vines on
the fence or even an arbor for the kids in childcare at the building.
• Consider river birch, willow trees or other water-tolerant trees by the drainage ditch
near the tennis courts. Consult with a landscape designer to find out how to the
transition between the mowed grass and natural plantings a little more graceful so it
doesn't look like an unintentional weed patch.
Just as most people.spend time and money making their home a reflection of themselves,
we should find.ways-to make the community center a reflection of the warmth and energy of
our city. Is it frivolous to'spend time and money decorating our community center? No
more than it is frivolous to make your home into a warm and inviting space.
If there are no unexpected costs in 2001,we will have a $51,000 fund balance in the
Community Center Fund at the end of the.year. As we proceed with the review of our public' .
spaces and with the budget, I propose we reserve part or all of that money or use other
resources to hire a commercial interior designer who will help us improve the interior of the
community center. We have the walls and the roof. Now lets make it a home.
•
cc: Jane Berg, Pat LeFevre, Beth Olson,Ann Fiskar, Lorraine Gordhammer, Nancy Gonzalez
