REPORTS FROM COMMISSIONS AND STAFF.
A. Planning Commission report on July 16, 2002 meeting,
1. Resolution 02-058, re: Drs. Hellickson, Larson, Portis and Associates, for 3909
Silver Lake Road, sign variance request.
Planning Commissioner Jim Hoska reviewed the details of the sign request with
the Council.

Hoska reviewed the suggestion made by Planning Commission Chair Chris
Melsha to try and reconfigure the sign to the horizontal position.

Hoska indicated that the Planning Commission determined that they had a
difficult time finding hardship with the request, and recommended denying the
request.

Dr. Larson came forward and stated that the doctors at the practice want to have
their names on the sign along with the address, because they are not an HMO.

Councilmember Horst asked Larson if he was aware that the current sign is the
second sign for that building, and stated that, for that reason, he was not in favor
of approving the sign variance request.

Motion by Councilmember Horst, second by Councilmember Faust,to adopt
Resolution 02-058, re: Denial of the sign variance request by Drs. Hellickson,
Larson, Portis and Associates at 3909 Silver Lake Road.

Motion carried unanimously.

Councilmember Sparks stated that her feeling was that it might be better to
simplify the sign, and not enlarge it.

Councilmember Thuesen stated that he felt that there were other options available
for the sign.

Councilmember Horst stated that he did not want the doctors to feel
unappreciated by the City Council's decision, as he felt that their practice was a
great asset to the City of St. Anthony.

Councilmember Faust echoed Councilmember Horst's statement that their
practice is indeed an asset to the community. He added that they have struggled
with the ground signs from the early 90's and getting some uniformity along
Silver Lake Road.
