Initiative 2
for ,
-Violence-Free
Families
February 26, 2003
City Manager Michael Mornson
City of St. Anthony
3301 Silver Lake Road
St. Anthony, MN 55418
Dear City Manager Mornson,
As the officially recognized Child Abuse Prevention Council for Henepin County, we, the representatives
of C.H.A.S.E. (Creating Healthy and Safe Environments) for Families, are writing to enlist your city's help
in making this year's Child Abuse and Neglect.Prevention Month a countywide campaign. As you may
know, each year communities across the United States designate April as Child Abuse and Neglect
Prevention Month. Many of them use this time to raise awareness about child abuse and examine the
roles each sector of the community must play to protect and nurture every child. This year, it is our goal
to encourage every municipality in Hennepin County to mark the importance of preventing child abuse
and neglect sometime during the month of April. Specifically, we are asking:
1. Your city council or Mayor to proclaim April 2003 as Child Abuse and Prevention Month in St.
Anthony.
2. St. Anthony had no reported child abuse cases in 2002. Celebrate that success by a public display in
your city building. Or, you can choose to focus on the 2124 total children who were caseloads for
Hennepin County child protection services.
3. That you send us a copy of your city proclamation by April 1. We will recognize each city at the April
16 Minnesota Twins game at the Metrodome.
It is our hope that as each year passes, and as everyday citizens take action to prevent child abuse, the
number of blue ribbons we see throughout Hennepin County will decrease. These first steps we are
asking you to take may seem small, but we believe that raising awareness precedes change, especially
when a powerful message comes from city leaders.
The Child Abuse Prevention Month Community Resource Packet contains several items we thought you
might find useful, including a draft proclamation. We also included a brochure (How to Be a Violence-
Free Family) in both English and Spanish languages, and a sample of the blue ribbons available from
Family Support Network.
Our commitment to renew and invest in partnerships between your city and our Child Abuse Prevention
Council, CHASE for Families, includes the offer of assistance from our staff person, Lois Gunderson.
Please contact her if we can assist your efforts in any way.
Sincerely,
Cleora Brown Vicky Veyers
Co-chair, CHASE for Families Co-chair, CHASE for Families
4123 E.
