STAFF REPORT
DATE: January 7, 1993
TO: Planning Commission
FROM: David Mark Urbia, Management Assistant
ITEM: SIGN ORDINANCE -- AMORTIZATION ISSUE
At the last meeting, the Planning Commission requested staff to research the concept of the
useful life of a sign. Staff contacted three larger sign companies to determine if there is an
industry standard or other guidelines. Staff contacted the following companies: (1)
Suburban Lighting, (2) Nordquist, and (3) Leroy.
A common answer was given by the three representatives from each company. The length
of time a sign last depends upon the material used. Generally, a metal cabinet sign will last
anywhere from ten to twenty plus years. The surface cover will usually wear out before the
cabinet or become outmoded.
•
•
