MEMORANDUM
•
DATE: 11/15/00 MEETING DATE: 11/21/00
TO: Planning Commissioners .
FROM: Susan Henry, Assistant City Manager
RE: Concept Review: City Monument Sign
The City Council is interested in a monument sign in front of the City Hall/Community Center
Building. At this time, Council and staff are looking for input from the Planning Commission during
this concept review. If necessary, a public hearing will be held at a future meeting, either January
or February. Jay Hartman, Director of Public Works; has been working with the LeRoy Sign Company
and has received a quotation for the sign in the amount of$37,015.
The proposed electronic monument sign poses two issues for the Planning Commission to consider
and which are currently restricted by city code: (1) the sign will be a public right of way; and (2) the
sign has the capability of animation and flashing. Basically, staff and the Planning Commission need
to take a closer look at the sign ordinance and decide if there is a way around the restrictions in the
code. Please find pictures of the proposed sign attached.
Staff Recommendation: Since this is a Concept Review, staff does not have a specific
recommendation at this time.
