Planning Commission Meeting Minutes
November 21, 2000
Page 5
•
1 Hanson commented that last Thursday was the first meeting of the Northwest Task Force, and that
2 he attended as a representative for Faith United Methodist Church. Hanson thought it was a good
3 meeting and he looks forward to contributing time and input towards the process.
4 Hanson mentioned that after the Northwest Task Force meeting,he mentioned to Mayor Cavanaugh
5 that, as a member of the Planning Commission,he had been disappointed about the outcome of the
6 Hillcrest Development/Apache Plaza proposal. He noted that the Planning Commission had worked
7 hard to make an informed recommendation to the Council, and had been discouraged at the ultimate
8 decision by the Council. Hanson continued by stating that he was enlightened and encouraged about
9 the possibility of another type of activity being considered at the Apache Plaza by-the Northwest
10 Task Force.
11 Additionally,Hanson reported that he received his Planning Commission meeting agenda packet at
12 8:30 p.m. the evening prior to the meeting.
13 Lastly,Hanson believes it would be a good idea to review the Planning Commission's goals for the
14 Year 2000, and he would like to encourage the three Planning Commissioners whose terms will be
15 up at the end of the year to reapply.
Thomas commented that he agrees with Hanson's ideas. Additionally, he would like to call the
it Commissioners' attention to a program that the Minnesota Finance Agency offers. In this respect,
18 he pointed out certain information contained in the Commission's agenda packets.
19 Additionally,Thomas would like to see the Planning Commission publicly support the Community
20 Revitalization Fund. He continued by explaining in further detail the essentials of the program.
21 He would like to suggest that the Planning Commission recommend that the City Council explore
22 the possibilities of applying for some of the grant funds and to inquire if the City is interested in
23 pursuing them. These funds would apply to the entire Village and not just the Northwest Quadrant.
24 Bergstrom noted that the deadline for these grants is December and June. Thomas said the first step
25 is to make a suggestion to the City Council to inquire if it is interested in pursuing these grants.
26 Then, the City Staff would go forward in taking steps to apply for the grant.
27 Bergstrom noted that this issue should move on to the City Council next week due to the deadline
28 of December. In the meantime, Bergstrom felt that he would refer this matter to Assistant City
29 Manager Sue Henry.
30 Bergstrom would discuss this issue with Assistant City Manager Henry. Additionally, Melsha
31 agreed to present this matter to the City Council at the Tuesday,November 28, 2000 meeting.
0 Melsha did not have any comments.
33 Bergstrom commented that he had written a memo to the Commissioners regarding the televised
34 meetings. He wished to remind the Commissioners that the meetings begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.
