CITY OF ST. ANTHONY
COUNCIL WORKSHOP MINUTES
June 9 , 1981
The meeting was called to order by Mayor,. Haik at 6-:48 P.M.
Present for roll--call: Marks , . Haik, Sundland and Ranallo.
Absent: Letourneau.
Also present: Larry. Hamer, Acting. City: Manager; . Ray Nelson,
Liquor Manager.
Mr. Nelson detailed the ..liquor operation at Apache Plaza, which was
the purpose-.of this..workshop. .. He indicated. 1980 gross sales for
the Apache operation was $1,090 ,000 with .a net profit of $149 ,000.
The off-sale alone did gross- sales of $858 ,000 . with a net profit
of $98.,.000 in 1980 .
The matter . of future location .of..a New Brighton .liquor operation
was brought .up by Mr.. Nelson. He pointed out that .if New Brighton
put in a liquor .store at .Silver' Lane and- Silver Lake Road, business
at the City 's Apache location would suffer. He told the Council the
lease at Apache will not expire for another three years. The City,
• under the present lease , pays $2 . 00/square foot and Mr. Nelson
anticipated it would increase to . approximately . $8 .00/square foot
in the next lease.
Mr. Nelson then proposed two options for anew location for an
off-sale liquor store to the Councilmembers.
(1) Blanske property located off of Silver Lake Road, the south
three lots along- Silver Lane. Mr. Blanske had quoted a
tentative price of $80 ,000 ..
Mayor. Haik indicated she would be opposed to that location.
(2) Fas .Gas property located on- the northeast corner .of 37th Avenue
and Silver Lake Road. Mr- Nelson contacted the owner, who
indicated .an interest .in selling this property.. The owner was
to contact Mr-. Nelson for further discussion, but had not
done so yet.
Councilman Ranallo suggested the Liquor Manager and the Acting City
Manager pursue possible purchase of the Fas. Gas property. The rest
of the Councilmembers appeared .to .be in agreement with this suggestion.
Councilman Ranallo also suggested the Liquor Manager .and Acting City
Manager .check .into the possibility of -purchasing the Purity Store
which .is immediately to the east of the Fas Gas property. This
• suggestion also appeared to meet with approval with the other Council-
members.
