REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING <br /> MARCH 24 , 1992 <br /> 3 PAGE 10 <br /> 4 <br /> 5 <br /> 6 no faith in the "permanency" of the sales tax. <br /> 7 <br /> 8 Councilmember Fleming attended the Transportation Meeting <br /> 9 where the disposition of the Motor Vehicle Tax was <br /> 10 discussed. Presently, it all goes into the State' s <br /> 11 General Fund. <br /> 12 <br /> 13 The City Manager addressed proposed legislation regarding <br /> 14 a sales tax being placed on city purchases . He noted that <br /> 15 the League of Minnesota Cities feels this proposal would <br /> 16 spread the problems equally and would apply to cities , <br /> 17 townships and counties . Presently, the budget cuts which <br /> 18 are being proposed do not include counties , school <br /> 19 districts or townships . <br /> 20 <br /> 21 The Mayor noted that residents must realize that property <br /> 22 taxes will have to be increased or services reduced. <br /> 23 Councilmember Fleming felt that potential cuts in <br /> 24 reducing police or firefighters will affect the health <br /> 25 and safety of the City. <br /> Report of Mayor Ranallo <br /> 8 <br /> 29 Last week Mayor Ranallo and Larry Hamer, Public Works <br /> 30 Director, attended the Aga Khan New Year Celebration. <br /> 31 They shared a meal with all of those in attendance. <br /> 32 <br /> 33 About seventy-five people join in the .worship and they <br /> 34 area non-christian religious group. The beliefs of the <br /> 35 organization is that no welfare nor unemployment help can <br /> 36 be received. The Mayor explained how unemployment is <br /> 37 funded by an employer insurance policy. <br /> 38 <br /> 39 Two residents of St . Anthony are members of the group. <br /> 40 They meet every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in <br /> 41 the Community Building. It was the Mayor' s observation <br /> 42 that many professional people are members. <br /> 43 <br /> 44 At the New Year Celebration they were entertained by <br /> 45 children of the members who did folk dancing. The Mayor <br /> 46 noted that the sect originated in India, but that now <br /> 47 most of its members are natives of Kenya and North <br /> 48 Africa. <br /> 49 <br /> 50 The City Manager advised that the owners of the new Stop <br /> 51 "N" Shop will be having an Open House and he will keep <br /> the Council apprised as to what dates are being <br /> considered. Mayor Ranallo noted that nearly all of this <br /> 54 strip mall is leased which is on Stinson Boulevard and <br />
