City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
• May 26, 1998
Page 6
premature and he did not want to say this is a buildable lot without seeing what will be built on
it.
Marks stated the lot is in legal existence at a 66 foot width. He questioned what a variance
would be given for at the present time.
Mayor Ranallo stated that in previous requests, the Council has granted the lot width variance
but then informed the builder that no other variances would be granted for the lot. The building
must fit the size of the lot. Ranallo suggested that the record show that the 66 foot lot is zoned
residential and a house can be placed on the lot under the grandfathered Ordinance but it will be
difficult to obtain additional variances to build on this lot.
Mr.Newgaard, 6171 Trinity Drive, explained that he was applying for the variance because four
years ago he spoke with the building inspector and was advised to do so.
Mornson stated this issue was discussed with the City Attorney at a previous Council meeting
and the City Attorney advised Council that the property owner was not required to apply for a
variance as the 66 foot lot is grandfathered in as a legal lot. The Council has previously
requested that these property owners request a variance so that they can have better control over
what is built on the lot. The requirement of a variance for this size lot is a policy decision that
was made by the Council.
Faust suggested the request be tabled until a building is proposed for the site.
Mayor Ranallo suggested that the minutes reflect that this is a legal 66 foot lot which was platted
before the City Ordinance was codified and is a legal lot.
Mr. Newgaard stated he was comfortable with this.
Commissioner Kaczor reported that Mr. Alvite, owner of Robodyne has appeared before the
Planning Commission at their last three meetings. He is attempting to relocate his business and
remain in the City of St. Anthony. He has met with a representative of the State of Minnesota
and they have stated that they do not want him to leave the State. The Planning Commission
suggested Mr. Alvite talk with City Manager about ways in which the City can help him to
relocate in the City.
Mayor Ranallo stated he was concerned that Mr. Alvite is still considering the Town& Country
building. That is a shopping center. It is not an industrial site.
Commissioner Kaczor stated that the Planning Commission did stress to Mr. Alvite that the City
would prefer to see him locate in the industrial park. He has investigated the buildings available
in the industrial park and has not found a location to suit his needs. The Planning Commission
has also discussed the possibility of a conditional use permit.
