I . Background to Governor Perpich' s Proposal <br /> In November 1986, Governor Perpich met with the <br /> United States Olympic Committee in his bid to bring Olympic <br /> Training and Development to the State of Minnesota. He <br /> was competing with 4 other states . <br /> His proposal , to build facilities, to house and feed <br /> athletes while they are in Minnesota, was the only one to <br /> receive U. S.O:C. endorsement . <br /> The Governor then met with the National Governing <br /> Boards for approximately 27 sports, in order to determine <br /> their needs for facilities , and also to assess the probable <br /> • positive economic impact through tourism that each of the <br /> sports _might have on Minnesota. <br /> Out of these meetings came a three-site proposal : <br /> it includes the University of Minnesota, Biwabik Giant ' s <br /> Ridge Ski Area, and Blaine. The planned sports are: <br /> Phase I Phase II <br /> Blaineoc� cer — Figure Skating <br /> Track & Field Ice Hockey <br /> Field Hockey <br /> Speed Skating <br /> Cycling <br /> U of P4 Swimming Gymnastics Volleyball <br /> Fencing Rowing Team Handball <br /> Table Tennis <br /> Biwabik Ski Jumping Weight-lifting <br /> Canoe/Kayak Judo <br /> Archery Taekwando <br /> Shooting <br /> Wrestling <br /> • <br />
