Planning Commission Regular Meeting Minutes
• December 16, 1997
Page 9
1 Mr. Sarna stated that the pylon sign is as low as is allowed and there is not much that can be
2 done with the configuration as the corner is too congested.
3
4 Commissioner Horst withdrew his motion from the table.
5 Commissioner Makowske stated he was generally in favor of the proposal but was having
6 difficulty with the hardship issue for both variance requests. He noted the proposal would be
7 an improvement to what currently exists.
8 Commissioner Franzese suggested the hardship was that the business was moved back from
9 the eye's view when traveling west on 37th Avenue and the pylon sign did not serve it's
10 function because of the overhead wires. She stated that the Commission wanted the business
11 to succeed and have it's best shot, but they were also trying to work within the codes which
12 had been established.
13 Mr. Sarna stated the ground signs would be surrounded by brick and shrubbery. They would
14 not be big and ugly. He noted that a 140 square foot ground sign would not appear big when
15 it is situated on the ground. He stated the proposed large sign would be similar to the sign at
16 the CITGO on County Road B2.
WCommissioner Thompson stated he was impressed with the appearance of the appearance of
18 the monument sign on County Road B2.
19 Commissioner Gondorchin stated he did not disagree with the intent of the proposal. He
20 would like to recommend approval but there is no proof of a hardship.
21 Mr. Sarna stated the hardship is that when traveling west on 37th Avenue, the station may not
22 be seen until the vehicle has already passed by.
23 Commissioner Gondorchin stated a variance would not be required to install a ground marker.
24 He stated he would like to recommend approval but personally could not.
25 Commissioner Horst noted that if a variance was granted for two ground signs, there was
26 nothing in the ordinance which would prevent the installation of another pylon sign in the
27 future.
28 Ms. Moore-Sykes stated City Staff has residential and commercial files which include the
29 minutes of any issues which are considered by the Council or Planning Commission. The
30 intent of no additional pylon sign would be apparent in the minutes.
31 Commissioner Franzese asked if Mr. Sarna had the right to two signs because the business has
32 frontage on two streets.
0
33 Ms. Moore-Sykes stated the ordinance is very clear that one ground sign is allowed for the
34 principal structure.
