He expressed <br /> 3 concern over constructing a structure of this size in a residential area. He <br /> 4 recommended the issue be tabled and returned to the Planning Commission for further <br /> 5 discussion. <br /> 6 Robert Jensen addressed the Council, stating the proposed garage will be a standard 3- <br /> 7 car garage in both width and height. He requires the extra space to store his <br /> 8 recreational vehicles and the standard garage is not deep enough. He stated he wishes <br /> 9 to comply with City ordinances regarding on-street overnight parking to keep his <br /> 10 residence uncluttered. He added the garage will have the same aesthetic profile as the <br /> 11 house. <br /> 12 Mr. Jensen stated the additional space, including a family room and kitchen extension, <br /> 13 would greatly benefit his family of 6. <br /> 14 Faust asked whether the existing home is a rambler as the drawing submitted by Mr. <br /> 15 Jensen depicts an L-shaped home. <br /> 16 Mr. Jensen stated the drawing is of the home, after renovations have been completed. <br /> 17 Thuesen asked whether Mr. Jensen has discussed the size of the garage with his <br /> 18 neighbors. Mr. Jensen stated his neighbors were in full support of his plans. He added <br /> 19 some of his neighbors had attended the first Planning Commission meeting at which the <br /> 20 Jensen's proposed garage was discussed to show their support of Jensen's plans. <br /> 21 Thuesen stated the Council could possibly be setting a precedence for the size of <br /> 22 residential structures. He added he is not opposed to the project, but would like to keep <br /> 23 the subject open for discussion. <br /> 24 Marks stated he is specifically concerned about the variance request, irrespective of the <br /> 25 City.Attorney's recommendation. He questioned whether the Planning Commission <br /> 26 had used variance requirements for granting the variance and whether any discussion <br /> 27 ensued. Bergstrom confirmed the Commissioners had considered the variance <br /> 28 requirements, but no discussion was undertaken after the City Attorney's opinion was <br /> 29 obtained. <br /> 30 Marks questioned whether the Council could determine a hardship if in fact a variance <br /> 31 request was involved. <br /> 32 Cavanaugh stated he is uncomfortable with allowing the increased garage size in a <br /> 33 residential area, which is over the current average garage size.
