How do I know if I have a cross connected sump pump?
The illustrations at right and below show one
• incorrect and one correct method of connection.
The key thing to look for is where the water
goes when the sump pump is running. If you
have a rigid, PVC-type pipe that goes outdoors PRIVATE C°NNECMCH USE
and drains into your yard (well away from your T° STORM SEWER
foundation, of course), you're probably okay. If SEWER $T0Q4
you have a hose that drains into your laundry tub ` FLOOR
M
OR
or floor drain, you're definitely not okay. If you
can see right away that your sump pump is -U3UC SANITARY
scL GRAIN Tt
cross connected, it would be to your advantage sP k
to get it re-routed prior to inspection. This will
SL; P1LP
WAS CNNCCT.ONPR!VA, EWATER O
save you time, as only one inspection will need TO SAWTAAY SCVER
to be done to confirm your correction. If you're PROPER UTILITY CONNECTION
not sure, information available at the public
meeting may help you decide. If you still can't
tell, don't worry. The inspectors will let you
know, and you will have time to get the problem
corrected before the surcharge is applied.
If you are re-routing your system, be sure
to buy the right kind of pipe. It must be a
PERIMETER OR rigid, PVC-type pipe, not flexible hose.
SUMPac FOOTING DRAINAGE Even in systems that already pump water
• SUMP PUMP outside, inspectors will require that
FLOOR DRAIN flexible hoses be replaced with rigid pipe.
How do I make an appointment for an
inspector to visit my home?
I. Personnel will be going door to door to try
to get as many homes as possible
inspected without appointments. If they
don't find you at home, they will leave a
notice on your door knob with the number
IMPROPER CONNECTIONS to call for an appointment. Voice-mail
SUMP PUMP TO FLOOR DRAIN has been installed on the phone so you
OR LAUNDRY TUB shouldn't have to call more than once. If
PERIMETER OR FOOTING TIL= you don't reach a person when you call,
TO FLOOR DRAIN OR SANITARY please do leave your name, telephone
SEWER SERVICE DIRECTLY
number, address, and the best time to
reach you. We will return calls during
business hours and in the evenings.
Why inspect my house?
Neither your home nor neighborhood has been singled out for any reason. All St. Anthony
homes and businesses with sanitary sewer connections will be inspected.
What will correcting a cross connection cost me?
• If you do the work yourself, less than $50, assuming your basement is unfinished and you
already have a sump pump. If an outside contractor is used, most corrections will be
around $200, again assuming your sump pump is in place and it's just a matter of
replacing flexible pipe and/or re-routing your flow.
