58
• MEMORANDUM
DATE: March 27, 1998
TO: Michael J. Mornson, City Manager
FROM: Kim Moore-Sykes, Management Assistant w
ITEM: Safety Committee Meeting Summary.
1. O ticp om System. Jay Olson and I discussed our meeting with Denise Miller of
Rennix Corp. who is working with cities and counties in the metro area to install the
Opticom System developed by 3M. The Opticom System allows emergency vehicles
the ability to change the signal lights to clear intersections of traffic and allow them to
pass safely. St. Anthony has 6 signal intersections that could be done and 3M will do 5
of them at a 40% discount. Her bid for the 6 intersections is $21,013, if ordered in
1998. Her bid does not include installing units in the emergency vehicles, which would
cost an additional $17, 910; also does not include engineering costs, purchasing or
laying cable or additional equipment that may be needed to upgrade existing cabinets.
It is estimated that this project will cost an estimated $50,000. Ms. Miller left an 11-
minute video that is very informative about the Opticom System.
• 2. Fitness Program for the City Employees (FTE). John Malenick received a copy
of a survey from Northwest Athletic Club, which was to survey interest of the Staff
regarding fitness program preferences. Instead, it just asked if employees would be
interested in joining Northwest Athletic Club. So the Committee discussed other
questions we thought appropriate or important to ask. Those questions are attached for
additional suggestions to the survey.
3. Health Insurance for Early Retirement. The Safety Commission has had
questions about whether or not the City was considering reinstating health insurance for
those employees who are thinking about retire early.
