CITY OF ST. ANTHONY
• RESOLUTION 93-067
A RESOLUTION REGARDING THE HENNEPIN COUNTY
LIBRARY IN THE CITY OF ST. ANTHONY
WHEREAS, our library has been in the community for 30 years. It is an established service
available to our residents that has become a part of their lives. Our residents do
use the library;
WHEREAS, the St. Anthony Library contributes to the quality of life in our City, and is so
important in attracting new families and maintaining a stable community;
WHEREAS, at a time when politicians and health care professionals everywhere are searching
for positive means to support family and educational programs, a community
library is probably the best return for your dollar. The library has become a
major focus of the shopping center it is located in and has helped in the economic
vitality of this small neighborhood shopping area. Without the library the
convenience of this shopping center will be weakened and have a potential impact
on businesses, which in turn means job losses.
• WHEREAS, in addition to book-lending, libraries also serve as a meeting place for young and
old alike. Our library has several programs like "Read-to-Me" that provide a
healthy atmosphere for parents and their children. Most of all, because the
library is in our community, there is more opportunity for those with young
children to make short trips to benefit from these programs;
WHEREAS, within a block of the library are three senior residences. Such a concentrated
area of these folks makes the location and availability of the library an important
factor;
WHEREAS, school children use and appreciate the convenience of our community library.
Public, private and parochial schools acknowledged the serious blow this would
be to St. Anthony children to lose our library;
WHEREAS, having a library in St. Anthony is also important to our citizens because of the
safety issue. Our residents can and do feel safe coming to our library. The
location offers a surrounding of security that is not evident at other locations,
particularly for vulnerable adults and children;
WHEREAS, libraries are one of the few positive and tangible commodities available to
taxpayers. Very often, citizens question what they get for their county tax
dollars. A library that is convenient and run well, as ours is, is a feather in your
cap!
