-5-
In updating his previous figures on the cost of remodelling the present
facilities, he explained that construction costs had risen 18% in the last 18
• months, and it was almost impossible to set a firm figure on any future
construction.
The architect said his study included 1h,500 sq. ft. of the space in Parkview
to house all the services necessary now and 13,000 sq. ft. at the present
City Hall.
Scheme A of the study covered the cost of utilizing the whole south portion of
the school building leaving the northern section near the recreation area for
possible compatible use in the future. Mr. Schuck said this plan would mini-
mize construction and was not a proposal for rebuilding the structure and
would involve mostly partitioning present school rooms in such a manner that
they could be reconverted to use as school rooms, if necessary. This plan
which would involve moving the Administration offices as well as the Fire and
Police departments to Parkview would provide all three departments with
entrances off 33rd Avenue N.T. rather than the busier Silver Lake Road. The
plan would utilize the newer of the two heating systems in the building with
the addition of air conditioning if desired for the Administration and Police
departments. A new heating system would have to replace the old one in the
section where the cafeteria and kitchen are now for the fire department with
a 30 foot fire hose tower to be erected to the east of the building. The
projected cost of the scheme was $183,000.
Under Scheme B, whereby only the Administration and Police services would be
moved to the school for three years and the present fire department would be
• remodelled and expanded to include the new fire truck and living and training
quarters, the projected cost was $58,708.
Scheme C revised the estimated cost of updating the present City Hall at
$236,365 from $200,309 with the cost of adding a second floor raising this
to $279,297•
Scheme D set the cost of erecting a new City Hall of 16,926 sq. ft. at
$541,000.
There was also a discussion of the cost of converting that portion of the
present City Hall which would not be used for expansion of the Fire department
in Scheme B so that it could be leased to the County as a library.
Several interested residents who were present for the discussion, including
Mr. Cowan and Mr. Gottwalt, were furnished copies of the feasibility study
and asked questions about the different proposals.
Supplying the reason for the three year interim plan for use of Parkview and
for the desirability of its use, Councilman Stauffer said there had been no
other attractive use of the school building which had been presented to
date and she felt the building should not be empty since an empty building
would probably generate a great deal of pressure for its use as a commercial
enterprise.
Mr. Schuck left the meeting at 11:15 P.M.
• Motion by Councilman Sundland, seconded by Councilman Sauer to approve
payment of $74.30 to Comstock & Davis.
Motion carried unanimously.
