City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
March 27, 2001
Page 2
•
1 Fahrenheit, and this gear is what protects them and allows them to safely return home to their
2 families at night.
3
4 Fire Chief Hewitt introduced Chris Fuller who was the fireman that headed the committee
5 responsible for conducting the necessary research on the fire apparatus. Fuller indicated that the
6 committee went to Minneapolis to try on gear, then brought in some vendors, discussed the cost,
7 tested different gear, and made the decision buying the best they could afford. He added that the
8 technological advances in the gear were incredible, and thanked the Council for funding the
9 money, and showing that they care about the Fire Department.
10 Mayor Cavanaugh thanked them all for coming to show their gear and appreciation and stated
I l that, as a community, he was proud to have them in the best safety equipment that they can
12 afford. He added that, seeing all of the apparatus, it is obvious that they got their moneys worth.
13 Councilmember Hodson inquired about the old equipment and what happens to it. Fire Chief
14 Hewitt responded that the old equipment is non-compliant so it cannot be passed along anywhere
15 in the United States for liability reasons.
16 Councilmember Hodson added that he has contacted an ambassador for Costa Rica who said that
they would be interested in this equipment. He volunteer to coordinate the effort to donate
40 equipment to Costa Rica, preferably in the area of the rain forest.
19 Mayor Cavanaugh stated the only issue he has with passing on the gear was that there be some
20 utility that accompanies it, so that there is not a false sense of protection and security. Otherwise,
21 Mayor Cavanaugh thought it was an excellent idea, and thanked Councilmember Hodson for
22 volunteering to work with Fire Chief Hewitt and City Manager Mike Mornson on this project.
23 Fire Chief Hewitt acknowledged Rob Miller, a thirteen- year veteran to the Fire Department, who
24 had accepted a position with the Woodbury Fire Department. He thanked Mr. Miller for his
25 service and dedication to the Fire Department and the City of St. Anthony.
26 Fire Chief Hewitt and Firefighter Fuller gave a brief overview of the new apparatus.
27 Mayor Cavanaugh thanked the department for coming, and the entire department shook hands
28 with the Council.
29 VI. COMMUNITY FORUM.
30 Mayor Cavanaugh invited any residents in the audience to speak to the Council on items that are
31 not on the regular agenda.
32 Hearing no further response, Cavanaugh moved forward with the agenda.
0
33 VII.
