COMMUNICATION WITH CITY COUNCIL <br /> 2 6.1 Designate a Planning Commission Representative to the March 22 2005 Ci1y Council <br /> 3 Meeting. <br /> 4 <br /> 5 Chair Stromgren stated that Commissioner Young would attend the City Council Meeting on <br /> 6 March 22, 2005. <br /> 7 <br /> 8 VII. PUBLIC HEARING. <br /> 9 NONE <br /> 10 <br /> 11 VIII. SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS <br /> 12 8.1 Presentation of Sunset Memorial Park Administration Buildin • A Preliminga National <br /> 13 Register and Condition Assessment— Charlene Roise and Todd Grover. <br /> 14 <br /> 15 Ms. Moore-Sykes stated that Sunset Memorial has met with Staff and a subcommittee of the <br /> 16 Planning Commission to review and discuss revisions that they are proposing to Sunset <br /> 17 Memorial Park. She stated that the Sunset Group also held an Open House on January 11, 2005 <br /> 18 noting that since then the City Council has approved the contracting with Hess, Roise and <br /> 19 Company, historical preservationists, to assess the condition of the Administration Building and <br /> 20 report back to the Planning Commission and City Council with their findings. She stated that <br /> 21 Ms. Roise and Mr. Grover have completed their assessment and are present to report their <br /> 22 findings to the Commission. <br /> 23 <br /> 24 Charlene Roise stated that she is an Architectural historian with Hess, Roise and Company <br /> 25 noting that the company has been around since 1990 working across the country on a variety of <br /> 26 projects. <br /> 27 <br /> 28 Todd Grover, McDonald &Mack stated that he specializes in historic preservation noting that <br /> 29 his organization has been in existence since 1976. <br /> 30 <br /> 31 Ms. Roise explained that she and Mr. Grover were hired to take a look at the Administration <br /> 32 Building located at Sunset Memorial to determine eligibility for national historic designation <br /> 33 potential. She stated that upon visiting the park they determined that the entire park area had to <br /> 34 be included in the review along with the Administration Building. She stated that they <br /> 35 determined that the park itself appears to be eligible for the national register noting that many are <br /> 36 determined eligible but not formally nominated. She provided the Commission with a brief <br /> 37 history of the park stating that she reviewed the history in the context of cemeteries in general. <br /> 38 She stated that the park plan was originally designed by Allen and Nichols, a prominent local <br /> 39 architectural firm and the first real firm of its' kind in Minnesota. She noted that Mr. Nichols, <br /> 40 who died in Rochester, Minnesota, appreciated the design enough to be buried at Sunset <br /> 41 Memorial Park. <br /> 42 <br /> 43 Mr. Grover stated that his focus was the structural analysis of the building noting that a synopsis <br /> 44 of the suggested reuse of the building is detailed in the report provided in the Commissioners <br /> 45 packets. <br />
