Printer version: Some say cemetery plan disturbs the peace Page 2 of 2
Alderwoods Group hired Charles W. Nelson, a historical architect, who concluded in a memo, "The
proposed design is sensitive to the significant historic character of Sunset Memorial Park while
addressing the needs of the cemetery long into the future."
Nelson and Charlene Roise, a historical consultant and architectural historian hired by the city, said the
cemetery is eligible for placement on the National Register of Historic Places.
Roise, president of Hess, Roise and Company, said the No. 1 preference should be to keep the
administrative building in place. Although the building by itself is not historically significant, it is part
of the cemetery and its historic significance, she concluded.
"They should try to work with it and save it if they can," she said. "That landscape is very important, so
dealing with parking issues is going to be a major challenge."
Anyone can go through the rigorous process of getting a property on the register, and while it is an
honor, it won't offer much protection, Roise said. Perhaps that's why some residents want to voice their
opposition now.
"The possible disturbance of the cemetery doesn't excite a lot of people," city manager Mike Morrison
said.
Resident and former Mayor Dennis Cavanaugh said he is vigorously opposed to a funeral home.
"My family is entitled to quiet enjoyment. We have a covenant that when we came in here it would be
quiet enjoyment," he said. "Why change this? The whole thing is just so special."
• IF YOU GO
WHAT: Public hearing on whether St. Anthony should allow funeral homes in areas that are not zoned
for such use
WHEN: 7 p.m. Tuesday
WHERE: City Hall, 3301 Silver Lake Road
CONTACT: City Hall, 612-789-8881
-COMPANY CRITICIZED
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Alderwoods Group, the Cincinnati funeral home and
cemetery operator that wants to put a funeral home in Sunset Memorial Park in St. Anthony, is included
in a lawsuit involving the top three chains in the country. The suit "charges that the companies engage in
price-fixing and sell caskets for as much as six times their wholesale cost," the Journal reported.
Contact the writer at 612-673-7512
or smccannnastartribune.com.
©Copyright 2005 Star Tribune.
