NEW POLICIES <br /> 70 Minnesota cities have tobacco-free park policies <br /> Anoka County becomes first county with a policy <br /> More and more Minnesota communities—representing nearly all parts of the state—have decided to <br /> eliminate tobacco use in their park systems based on requests from the community.Their decisions were <br /> based on several reasons:to protect the health of the community,to promote positive role modeling for <br /> youth,to preserve the beauty of their parks by reducing cigarette butt litter,and to recognize that public <br /> park and recreation areas should promote health and wellness.Below are summaries of each community's <br /> policy: <br /> Anoka County <br /> Policy:No tobacco use at county beaches,picnic areas,playgrounds,Bunker Beach Water Park, archery <br /> center,riding stables,Camp Salie and within 50 feet of park building entrances. <br /> Adoption date:7/12/2005 <br /> Location:northern Twin Cities suburbs <br /> Battle Lake <br /> Policy:No tobacco use at city parks, shelters,beaches,public swimming areas and the public lake access. <br /> Adoption date:6/14/05 <br /> Locationlpopulation: West Central Minnesota; 800 <br /> Dayton <br /> Policy:No tobacco use on city-owned park land,recreational facilities,city facilities,and open space. <br /> Adoption date:6/14/05 <br /> Locationlpopulation:NW suburbs; 5,000 <br /> Edina <br /> Policy:No tobacco use on all city-owned park property, including Centennial Lakes park and all city- <br /> owned golf courses <br /> Adoption date:8/17/04 <br /> Locationlpopulation:Minneapolis. suburb;48,000 <br /> Golden Valley <br /> Ordinance:No smoking at public parks and recreation facilities, including Brookview Golv Course. <br /> Adoption date: 10/19/04 <br /> Locationlpopulation:Minneapolis suburb;21,000 <br /> International Falls <br /> Ordinance:No tobacco use on city-owned property,including parks,buildings,and equipment,except for <br /> streets. <br /> Adoption date: 5/28/04 <br /> Locationlpopulation: far northern Minnesota;6,500 <br /> Maplewood <br /> Policy:No tobacco use on city-owned parkland,except for community center patio areas. <br /> Adoption date: 1/24/05 <br /> Locationlpopulation: St.Paul suburb;35,600 <br /> Rock County <br /> Policy:No tobacco use at county worksites and recreational sites. <br /> Adoption date: 5/18/04 <br /> Location: far SW comer of Minnesota <br /> All communities have received tobacco-free signs from Tobacco-Free Youth Recreation to help enforce <br /> their policies and are working with local tobacco control advocates to develop additional ideas for <br /> publicizing their policies to community members. <br />
