M <br />MEMORANDUM <br />DATE: March 17, 1997 <br />TO: Michael Morrison, City Manager <br />FROM: Connie Kroeplin, City Clerk <br />ITEM: UPDATE ON CHANGING PRECINCT 1R LOCATION <br />As you are aware, I have been considering a change of location for Precinct 1, Ramsey <br />County. Presently, voters vote at Apache Plaza, in the hallway of the northwest corner. <br />A change from this location is needed because: <br />1) Its availability is uncertain due to redevelopment at Apache. <br />2) There were several complaints from voters about the location, i.e., they couldn't find <br />it (it was plainly marked, but the area looked different because of the CUB <br />construction) and parking was difficult. <br />3) Election judges commented on the poor lighting, chilly hallway, lack of a convenient <br />restroom. <br />Larry and I have discussed other locations. They are: <br />a) The gym at Wilshire Park. The problem with using the school is parking. <br />Superintendent Rolek has voiced his concern that there would not be enough parking <br />places. <br />b) Chandler Place. I understand they have a large area which could be used. Parking <br />would be a serious problem. They may charge us. I have not spoke with anyone <br />from Chandler Place. <br />C) Storage garage at Public Works. The facility has plenty of space and parking would <br />not be a problem. Larry assured me the garage would be cleaned and can be <br />sufficiently heated. He will show me the facility soon. <br />I recommend relocating the Ramsey County polling location to the storage garage at the <br />Public Works because: it's City property; it's in Ramsey County; parking won't be a <br />problem; it is handicap accessible; and, because Public Works personnel have always set up <br />the voting places, so it would be convenient for them to be able to set up at their work site. <br />
