I (o <br />Diversion staff and the hours of community service completed by the youth. Diversion services <br />are valued at $50.00 per hour. <br />Awareness Seminars: The Diversion Program also provides educational Awareness . <br />Seminars. Four seminars are offered: Theft Awareness, Chemical Awareness, Tobacco <br />Awareness, Fire Awareness. At least one parent is required to attend with their child. <br />The "Number of Clients" in the following charts only reflect the number of youth <br />attending the seminars, participating parents are not included in these numbers. <br />Youth Run Business Ventures: <br />NYFS operates two youth -run business: a concessions business at the New Brighton Family <br />Center, a second -hand clothing store at the Fairview Community Center. Also, in the first six <br />months of 1996 another concessions business was operated as a part of the Youth Activity Center. <br />In 1997, NYFS converted the Youth Activity Center to Penny Pinchers, a second -hand clothing <br />store. This program was designed to train at -risk youth who have no work experience or who <br />have failed in the work force. These young people receive employment experience and training <br />in the areas of resume building, interviewing and conflict resolution. In 1996 at total of 51 youth <br />received training through The Youth Run Business Program. Each worker completes a 12 week <br />employment session and works on average 64 hours. Employment services are also billed at a <br />rate of $50.00 per hour. <br />Senior Chore Program: <br />The Senior Chore Program focuses on linking youth workers with area senior citizens to provide <br />home chore services which allows the seniors to remain independent in their homes. The Senior <br />Chore Program gives youth an opportunity to interact positively with their elderly neighbors, <br />learn basic work skills and earn money. In 1996, 285 youth were registered with the program <br />and 261 seniors requested chore services. Over 2,200 hours of chore services were provided. <br />Family Support Project: <br />Beginning in 1994, NYFS became a Case Management Agency for The Ramsey County Human <br />Services Family Support Project. This project has a goal of servicing families at risk of <br />becoming involved with child protection. NYFS staff assists the families in identifying their <br />problematic issues, developing family goals and implementing a plan to utilize community <br />resources to resolve those issues. 7 families received 240 hours of service through NYFS in <br />1996. <br />Young Fathers Program: <br />The Young Fathers Program assists young men who are becoming fathers to understand their <br />rights and responsibilities as a father and provide the support they need to remain actively <br />involved with their children. The goals of the program are to prevent further teen pregnancy and <br />increase their ability to provide effective emotional, developmental and financial support to their <br />children. Resources include education/vocational planning, parent education, relationship <br />counseling and support groups. In 1996, 27 young men were actively enrolled The Young <br />Fathers Program. <br />
