City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
April 25, 2006
Page 16
1 proposals of franchise models but did not pursue that option after going back to their core
2 objectives because they felt it did not meet their long -term needs.
Mayor Faust noted the Minneapolis model is where St. Anthony is at with one provider but that
does not have the competitiveness that the City prefers. He asked if all of St. Louis Park has
access to DSL. Mr. Asp answered that about 30% of St. Louis Park can get DSL service so there
is more DSL access in St. Anthony.
9 Mayor Faust pointed out that Falcon Heights and Lauderdale have police contracts with St.
10 Anthony and are aligned to the southeast. He asked if that would present any unusual
I 1 technology problems because of crossing interstates and major roadways. Mr. Asp stated it may
12 increase construction costs but is not a major obstacle with Wi Fi.
13
14 Mayor Faust stated this option needs to be out in the public forum to be discussed. He thanked
15 Mr. Asp and Ms. Johnson for their input. Ms. Johnson noted this report is posted on the City's
16 website.
17
18 Mayor Faust stated that a lot more work is needed on Wi Fi and it will again be discussed by the
19 Council to create a framework of specific objectives. He encouraged the staff to continue
20 looking at what is happening with Wi Fi, potential partners, and pilot programs.
21
22 VII.
