City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
May 23, 2006
Page 7
Mr. Sederstrom commented by doing every two weeks, he is able to take down one of the trucks
for servicing on the off week. As an independent, this helps him compete with the big
companies.

Councilmember Stille stated it sounds like there is an advantage to the residents, but there is also
a benefit to the hauler. He indicated he is concerned for the residents with single garages and no
room to store the cart inside.
Ms. Klennert replied there are benefits to the haulers. She stated the new bins take up the same
footprint as the previous bins. Waste Management has done some extra education to their
customers.

Mr. Sederstrom said there are several cart sizes available.

Mayor Faust referred to the size of the recycle cart. He stated the Shoreview website indicates a
35 or 64- gallon recycle bin available. He questioned Ms. Klennert And Mr. Sederstrom if it
were written that way in the Ordinance; it might help, as some households would not fill the
larger bins.

Ms. Klennert replied recycling is an unlimited service and Waste Management has 30, 60 and
90- gallon containers available.

Mr. Sederstrom does not typically deliver the small bin, but he does when requested.

Mayor Faust talked about the decrease in the number of vehicles on the streets. He then asked if
the haulers would be open to a City contract and reducing the cost to residents. Mayor Faust
asked what the advantage would be to residents to accept the single sort recycling.

Ms. Klennert stated she would research the contract option.

Mr. Sederstrom stressed his opposition to this option. He stated the City is already his customer
and does not feel he should have to bid with the City.

Mayor Faust again asked where the payback is for the customer. He sited an article on glass
recycling.

Ms. Klennert replied Waste Management uses multiple markets for all recycling materials. Glass
goes to several areas such as sand blasting, construction medium and to Anchor Glass in
Minneapolis.

Mayor Faust asked if glass recycling were added to the Ordinance as a condition of single sort,
would haulers pick it up.

Ms. Klennert stated they do recycle glass.
