2016 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

30 | Page

questions you may have. Typically the survey involves discussing safety of all kinds regarding
your home specifically. Cooking, use of electrical adapters, fireplaces, trip and fall hazards,
having medical information readily available (like the previously mentioned File of Life) as well
as Carbon Monoxide and Fire Alarms. The emphasis of the survey is checking locations of
smoke alarms already in the home, the date of those alarms, and possible spots to put
additional alarms. This is not a formal fire inspection but a very informal discussion. We do
require a simple informational sheet we fill out and return to the Red Cross. Based on the
situation and need, we may be able to supply up to 3 fire alarms at no cost. These are supplied
at no cost to us through the partnership with the American Red Cross.
Smoke alarms save lives! This was accomplished thru
an application process that focused on our readiness as a community to handle any type of
cardiac event within the city. This not only looked at the readiness and equipment level of the
personnel responding to a 911 call for help: police, fire and Ambulance. It also focused on the
community at large. Our Police officers are trained as first responders, and as state certified
EMT’s the members of the St. Anthony Fire Department have special training in handling any
cardiac event. Our city also teams up with Hennepin County Medical Center for our ambulance
service. All these levels of care from basic through advanced care, were viewed as highly
favorable on our application. But that was not all that was required. We also needed to
demonstrate the community itself was ready for action. This is where all of our CPR training
done in the schools, and CPR classes given by members of the department to the local public
come into play. But yet there was more needed! We made an attempt to locate businesses that
have public access to an AED or Automated External Defibrillator. This tool plays a big role in
the AHA’s Chain of Survival! We found that many of our local businesses and offices, and all of
our schools have access to an AED! All of this put together allowed the American Heart
Association to designate the City of St. Anthony as a Heart Safe Community! In 2016 we
continue to improve our community each and every year by offering and giving CPR courses by
certified instructors on the fire department. With this ongoing training and AED availability
