She said she thought the trailer
gave a "tacky look to the City" and only proved her first conclusion
that "such facilities never come down once they're allowed. "
Councilmember Enrooth agreed that this was just another instance of deja
vu, where businesses "once they get one of these facilities up try. to
stretch their use as long as they can because they are an extremely
economical form of rent. "
Councilmember Ranallo indicated he perceived the trailer had already
been in use for more than a year and "a few more months can't make that
much difference. " Mayor Sundland said he was somewhat of the same
opinion, but thought the City ought to take a more active role in
assuring that the facility is removed by April 1st. He warned Mike
Donatelle and Bob Olson of -Minnesota Scientific who were present, that
"the Council would probably not look with favor on any further, exten-
sions of the deadline. " He then invited their comments.
Mr. Donatelle, who was accompanied by his brother, Charles, took full
responsibility for overlooking the deadline date saying it had just
been an oversight on their part not to have approached the City sooner
about an extension. He said he had, realized that not doing so
would create so many problems for his tenants. The Donatelle Properties
spokesman assured the Council that the temporary facility "would be down
by April 1st, or even before that date. He said his firm had made.
a thorough search of the area for office space and the Donatelle
building in New Brighton was the only one which had space which met
their needs. The Minnesota Scientific representative indicated he was
certain the "New Brighton space would be available at the latest by
April 1st. "
Mayor Sundland indicated he perceived an even split on the Council- on
the issue and with the concurrence of the proponents, deferred official
action on the extension until Councilmember Marks arrived and a full
vote of .the Council was possible.
Absence of Building Plans Causes Council to Give Only Conceptual
Approval to Salvation Armv's Plans for Upgrading Silver Lake Camp
Because there was no one present from the Salvation Army, Commissioner
Brownell drew the Council's attention to Pages 10 and it of the
Commission minutes where the discussions with the Camp Manager and
Colonel Smith of the Salvation Army were reported along with the
Commissioners' unanimous recommendation that the Council approve the
Master Plan which "would bring Silver Lake Camp into the 20th Century."
He reported that new administration and maintenance/garage buildings
were proposed to be constructed at this time and pointed out that the
