2017 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

21 | Page

• We were able to send 2 firefighters to specialized flammable liquids rail training in
Pueblo Colorado.
• There were also fewer rookie hours due to some of our in-house training being pushed
back.
• We expect an increase in training in 2018 due to final training for our 2016 rookie class
this spring. We have also increased the amount of training for our hires acquiring
Firefighter I and II certifications.
ROOKIE TRAINING PROGRAM
By Lieutenant Joe Basara

We take pride in training our own firefighters as much as possible in house at the fire
station. This process can be very time consuming, not only for the candidates but as
well as the firefighters who are the instructors. As you may know being a firefighter
can take a lot of time, not only with training that doesn’t seem to ever end, but also
with firefighters having to retain everything they are taught over their career.
Firefighters are expected to know everything in extremely stressful situations and need to figure
things out in a short amount of time. Being able to train in house, as we call it, can be very
beneficial as all of our members get to train with other members of our department and are able
to train with equipment that we work with on a daily basis.

In 2017, four firefighter candidates successfully completed our training program. This was a
very busy year for us, and to still be able to successfully train these firefighters to our standards
was a great achievement. You may ask what is all entailed in training our candidates. Below you
will find some short examples of what our training looks like on paper.
