REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION

Meeting Date: September 11, 2018

Motion- Appointing two students as Student Liaisons on the Planning and Parks Commissions.

OVERVIEW:

The New Brighton-St. Anthony School District is launching a Youth in Leadership program to place
youth on a variety of civic organization boards. As part of our identified goal to foster and encourage
civic engagement, staff recommends adding youth as non-voting members to our Planning and Parks
Commissions. The students must be a St. Anthony resident for appointment on the Planning and Parks
commissions and past participation in Students in Government is preferred. This opportunity would
give the youth the experience of serving on an appointed board, learn about issues tasked to the
Planning and Parks Commissions, develop leadership skills and build their resume. The city will be
able to hear from youth regarding city issues during discussion at the meetings.

The term of their appointments will be September 2018 through July 2019.

Staff recommends appointing Nimo Hashi as the Student Liaison to the Planning Commission and Aye
Keita as the Student Liaison to the Parks Commission.
15
