2018 Annual Report • Administration • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

49

VII. Technology
Metro I-Net
Through an intergovernmental shared services agreement with the City of
Roseville, the City of St. Anthony is a contributing partner of a much larger
information technology consortium collectively referred to as Metro-INET. The
Metro-INET network collaborative includes 44 government entities located in the northeast
Twin Cities metropolitan area and collectively is one of the largest municipal networks in the
state. The Roseville IT Division, with a staff of 19 full-time staff, supports the daily technology
needs of about 1,300 full-time employees, with another 400 part-time, temporary, seasonal and
elected officials that require city email and data access. As part of this consortium, St. Anthony
realizes a number of cost efficiencies through economies of scale and benefits from advanced
technologies that might otherwise be unaffordable outside this cost sharing program.
Additionally the City benefits from a larger pool of IT employees that can provide continuous
support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Computer Replacements
Microsoft announced recently that support for the Windows 7 operating
system will end on January 14, 2020. This means that Microsoft will no
longer offer security enhancement for vulnerabilities discovered after that
date. As a result, all computers have to be upgraded or replaced before that
date. Given the time it would take to upgrade the operating system software
and reinstall other needed software, replacing the computers is a more
economical approach. Also, virtually all of the city computers will have
reached the end of their expected 5-year life cycle by the end of 2019.
With the help of Roseville IT, staff replacements of computers continued in
2018. All the computers in the Police Department have been replaced.
Computers in the in the Public Works Department and the Liquor
Operations are scheduled for early 2019 replacements.
