2018 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

9 | P a g e

III. Fire Code
By Fire Marshal Chris Fuller
FIRE CODE ACTIVITIES

FIRE CODE
The state has a more aggressive adoption process for code changes. The
goal of the State Fire Marshal’s office is to have the 2018 International Fire Code out for review
by the middle of 2019 and adopted in early 2020. This will keep us more current with existing
code. As was mentioned in the last report, the 2016 MN Fire Code was based on the 2012
International Fire Code.

TRAINING
All full-time fire department staff have state Fire Inspector I certification. The staff attends
continuing education throughout the year provided by local & state assistance. This includes
various training sessions focusing specifically to Fire Marshals. A membership that the city has
is a one with the Fire Marshals of Minnesota (FMAM) where Assistant Chief Chris Fuller serves
as Treasurer. This group meets quarterly and has been a great networking opportunity as well
as educational where training is provided at every meeting.
Staff attended code update classes related to the 2016 MN State Fire Code and more will be
offered with the adoption of the new code.
New full time fire equipment Operator Alex Van Galder began his fire inspector class and
completed it in January of 2019.

PERMITS
Construction plans are reviewed to ensure compliance with state and national codes in the area
of site plans, fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, egress plans, hazardous operations,
construction and operational plans. Two large projects were completed in 2018 and several
smaller projects and remodels were reviewed for compliance.
One project that was completed was the sprinkling of St. Charles Borromeo School. The issue
was driven by the desire to be licensed for certain activities which triggers an inspection by the
State. The building had to be brought into compliance to satisfy licensing and putting in
sprinklers was the most effective way to do this. We worked with both the State Fire Marshal
